Coming up with ideas

During this phase, our group had already defined our problem - Elderly who has weak knees and are using walking canes require an additional support system in order for them to get up or sit down with ease.”. To solve this problem, we came up with three main ideas to act as a support system for the elderly.

1. Improvising an existing cane into a walker which also has a function of a seat.

Something similar to this, just that it is foldable for easier use on a daily basis

2. Creating a cane that could be opened up like a ladder to create sufficient support for the elderly to get up

Something similar to this, but more customised for the elderly’s height.

3. Making a cane with a larger stable base and an adjustable handle that could diverge into two handles for the elderly to hold both handles for increased support.

We drew a design of this particular idea, and also included the individual components needed to assemble it.

4. Making a cane with a built-in umbrella function to free their other hand.

This is a visual that we tried to use for the idea, it was a good idea to fuse both together but it may become too bulky

After discussions, we decided to finalise on the third one.

Why Idea 3?

Out of all the ideas, Idea 3 is the most apt for our problem statement. Through research, we found out that this idea has not been implemented in the market yet, giving us an opportunity to shine. The features ‘’larger stable base’’ and ‘’adjustable handles’’ are simple, yet powerful tweaks that can enhance the support system of a walking cane.

Idea 1 is not suitable to provide support for the elderly when they are trying to stand up or sit down. It is more of a mobility tool when walking around. Moreover, this idea has already been done in the market.

Idea 2 seems like a feasible idea. However, it can be bulky and complicated to use, which can discourage the elderly to try our product.

Idea 4 sounds unique but it does not address our problem statement.

Therefore, we chose Idea 3 which solves our problem statement best and is ideal for elderly who needs a light, simple solution.
